Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)

The instructor led AHA PALS course utilizes a series of videos and simulated pediatric emergencies to reinforce the important concepts of basic life support, a systematic approach to pediatric assessment, team dynamics and review of the PALS treatment algorithms. The goal of the PALS course is to improve the quality of care and outcomes of seriously ill or injured children.

The AHA PALS course is designed for healthcare professionals who are involved in the care and management of pediatric patients. This includes physicians, nurses, paramedics, emergency medical technicians, respiratory therapists, physician assistants, residents, fellows, medical or nursing students.

Course Format and Exam

For an instructor led course a pre-course self-assessment exam must be taken, with a passing score of 70 % to take the PALS course. A certificate of completion should be printed out and taken to your class.

In the instructor led, classroom course, students will participate in simulated scenarios, and various skills stations at the end of the course, students must perform, and pass skills testing and pass the PALS written exam with a score of 84% or higher. Please note that e-books, provider manuals or any personal notes taken during class can be used as references during the exam.

After course completion you will receive your certification e-card via email within 12-24 hours. Each respective certification is valid for 2 years from the date of class/ card issue.

The HeartCode BLS online offers students flexibility with a blended eLearning platform allowing students to learn at their own pace. The online portion will assess and test your understanding with an exam, that must be passed with a score of 84% or higher. After this the student must complete an in-person skill assessment to ensure competency. Upon completion of all the mentioned steps, a completion card will be awarded to the student.

Course content includes:

  • High-quality child and infant CPR and AED
  • Recognition of difference between respiratory distress and failure
  • Assessment and implementation of early interventions for respiratory distress and failure
  • Recognition of types of shock and treatment
  • Recognition of differences between unstable and stable patients with arrhythmias
  • Clinical characteristics of instability in patients with arrhythmias
  • Post–cardiac arrest management

An updated AHA 2020 PALS provider manual is required for the instructor led class. You have the option to purchase the Provider Manual or eBook. We do not stock books for purchase, but we will provide links for purchase in your registration confirmation email. If you are unable to purchase a book, please contact us prior to your scheuled class.
